Unsettled: adjective: Not yet resolved; uncertain, open, evolving, unanswered, ambiguous.
I have never been settled in life. For as long as I can remember, I have been on the move. It started when we as a family had to move from town to town every two or three years, because my banker dad would get transferred. During summer vacation every year, there would be the mandatory travel to Thrissur and the tiny village of Desamangalam in Kerala, where my grandparents used to live. There would be other long forays too, because dad and mum loved to travel. And we had to use up dad’s LTC quota every year!
Naturally, the love for travel seeped into my blood. This has led to various journeys from the time I hit college. I especially love trekking in the mountains, as much as I love sitting still in their folds, taking in their sounds & their silence.
The more I travelled, the more I was interested in nature, culture, history, food and people. After all, what is travel but a simultaneous exploration of all these themes?
I travel close to the ground most of the time. And, I travel slowly. I love taking buses, trains, and autos. Wherever I go, I walk and cycle around a lot, taking in the sights, sounds and aromas of life there. Interacting with locals gives me an insight into what makes them tick. It shows me that we just have to scratch a bit under the visible differences to find the oneness of life everywhere.
The very idea of seeking out and taking in experiences with humility, an open heart and empathy appeals enormously to me. It is the very antithesis of staying put in one place and being smug. It is the antithesis of a stable, settled, terribly monotonous, narrow and lazy existence. Heck, I want to look at life through a wide-angled lens! What’s life without wonder, uncertainty, adventure and discovery, eh?
And so, welcome to ‘An Unsettled Life’, my blog on all things interesting to me.
Through this blog, I try to look beyond the obvious, seeking out stories and experiences that throw a different light on life. I don’t intend this to be a conventional blog. I don’t want it to be only about me – what I did, saw, ate, and so on. I want it to be a collective of voices from the domains I explore. Which means that, apart from my own experiences, I will feature those of others, too. Also, I don’t want to tout certain experiences merely because they are popular. I want this blog to be about experience, people & thoughts that have moved me deeply.
Anything I find unusual, intriguing, impactful, compassionate or subaltern will find its way into this portal. I think this is a great way to enrich my life & yours, and to highlight the wonderful work of several communities.
Join me as I wander about, encountering places, people, food and culture. I hope you enjoy the stories, pictures, interviews and videos on this blog.
Come, let’s explore. Let’s live a thoroughly unsettled life!
